6 Week Course £70
Scentwork is when a dog uses its sense of smell to identify and locate a target odour which it has been trained to detect.
Dogs have a highly sensitive nose, vastly superior to our own and this behaviour has been put to many uses – for example in police work, search and rescue, and hunting.
As a training activity, scentwork is fun, very rewarding and at the same time mentally stimulating for your dog. It will improve the relationship between you and your dog and is a great confidence builder.
You can participate whether it is just for fun or go on and enter trials and gain qualifications.
It is suitable for all breeds and ages.
Dogs with injuries or disabilities – Scentwork is a non-injurious sport.
TARGET ODOURS ARE:
Cloves - (clove Whole – Schwartz)
Gun Oil - (Napiers Gun Oil VP90 125ml bottle)
Truffle Oil - (English Truffle Oil – Truffle Hunter 100ml)
Tables and Chairs - The dog to find one scented article hidden amongst 2-4 tables and 8 chairs.
Exterior Search - The dog to find one scented article hidden amongst 10-15 large items in a ‘marked out’ outdoor area approximately 20 x 20m in size. The area can be of any shape. Prior to the test the handlers will be told that the scented article is hidden on one of three items selected by the judge.
Vehicle Search - The dog to find one scented article hidden on the exterior of a car or van.
Boxes & Luggage - The dog to find one scented article indoors amongst 10-15 containers.
Dogs can be on or off lead. The length of time allowed for each search area will be 3 minutes.
This will interduce your dog to the target odours, the 4 search areas and how to search and indicate to the handler when found.
This level builds up the 4 search areas ready for a fun trial, where you can gain points towards an “Excellent Title”
Level Two & Above
QUALIFICATIONS & EXCELLENT TITLES
Excellent Titles - These will be awarded to all those who obtain 20 points or more at one level. Points can be gained at trials and the title is to reward consistency and excellence at that level.
Points will be awarded as follows:
- 1st – 10 points
- 2nd – 8 points
- 3rd – 6 points
- 4th – 4 points
- ‘Clean Sweep’ – 2 points
- ‘Qualified’ – 1 point
- ‘Bonus points’ – 2 points (For teams that achieve ‘full marks’ in total at any trial)
NB ‘Clean Sweep’ (2 points) & ‘Qualified’ (1 point) points are only awarded to those that haven’t already been awarded points for a 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th place at a trial.
Points can only go forward if the dog also ‘Qualifies’
Once the ‘Dog’ has obtained 20 points they will be awarded an ‘Excellent’ title at that level and be awarded with a special rosette to mark this achievement. Points obtained will also go towards the Dog of the Year award.
DOG AND HANDLER OF THE YEAR
This will be awarded to the dog & handler team that gains the most points at trials during the year.
